The extensions of the Star of the Sea RC Primary School were carried out to create a two form entry primary school and rid the site of mobile and temporary classrooms.
A symmetrical arrangement of 7 no. classrooms and nursery have been created around a central landscaped courtyard. Each classroom has direct access to an outside terrace, whilst the nursery has its own secure play area and separate access.
The section and orientation of the classrooms creates a light and airy feel whilst minimising the use of artificial light. Clerestory lights create natural cross ventilation whilst the heating is underfloor. Bright electronic blinds together with electric opening windows in the clerestory lights also maintains thermal comfort.
The construction, in the main, is block and brick to create thermal mass and reduce temperature imbalance. Externally steel pergolas with brise soleil minimise glare and in turn connects the school to its immediate landscape and open aspect.
