The scheme was won in a limited design competition to an outline brief produced by the school in March 2005. Extensive accommodation included a new Sports Hall, Dance & Drama Studios, Dining Area and Kitchen, Music & Practice Rooms and further classrooms.
The whole complex had to be accommodated on a tight urban site which would include limited demolition and required the connection of three existing buildings, two of which were listed and on different levels and within a conservation area. The outline concept was further developed with Staff and the local Planning Authority over the next six months which involved visits to other sites such as existing sports halls and arts facilities to help staff realise thoughts and ideas. The three storey development is orientated around a central three storey entrance hall with open circulation balconies which gives focus and orientation to such a complex development. Traditional materials were chosen to reflect the sensitive nature of the location and the whole building is DDA compliant. The contract was completed in close liaison with the Contractor and Bursar and careful phasing ensured the scheme was realised without any temporary accommodation or decanting of pupils.
